Firstly, no-one is directly to blame for this issue, but it could cause some angst if you happen to come across this set of circumstances …
For some years I have been using a Sennheiser XSW-D digital wireless mic system as my main unit when creating tutorials, podcasts and the like. About a year ago I married this with a RØDECaster Peo II console, and on advice, set the mic “type” in the RØDECaster settings to Condenser.
All has worked perfectly ever since.
Earlier this week, for the first time, I decided to use my Sennheiser Profile Wireless twin mic system with the RØDECaster Pro II, and it gave odd results. About 5 seconds after turning the receiver on it would turn itself off. Connectivity was via a RØDE 2.5mm to XLR adaptor.
A call to Sennheiser Tech Support suggested a firmware update was the initial diagnosis, but this didn’t fix the issue so it was deemed the system was faulty, and an RA was issued and the goods sent to Sennheiser service in Sydney.
However, the next day, I decided t use my Sennheiser Profile Wireless single mic system which has been working for months stand alone quite happily. But after plugging it into the RØDECaster , it gave exactly the same symptoms, so obviously something was astray.
A call to RØDE ascertained that the Condenser setting by default turned on 48v Phantom power, and so most likely, this was frying the Sennheiser receivers. You can apparently change this default if required.
As I say, no direct fault can be aimed at anyone here; it just goes to show that it is best to double check everything before simply plugging something in, especially when power might be involved.
By the way, the correct stting for the Sennheiser Profile Wireless with a RØDECaster Pro II is “Dynamic” according to RØDE.
