I haven’t seen it in the flesh as yet (and hope to have one very soon), but today Insta360 announced the new X6 360° camera we all knew was coming is now available.
So, here are the specs etc straight from the source, and as soon as I can get a review unit, I’ll of course be letting you know my thoughts of the X6 and comparing it to the GoPro MAX and the (impending) DJI 360 II which whispers say is to be announced tomorrow.
“X6 is the camera we always wanted to build. It captures everything around you, in any light, and hands you a finished edit before you even reach for your phone,” shares JK Liu, Founder of Insta360.
Image Quality: Superior Detail, Day and Night
X6 sees more light than any X-series camera before it, with Flagship 1-Inch Equivalent 360 Imaging through Dual Custom Sony 1/1.1″ Square Sensors, co-developed with Sony
exclusively for Insta360 360 cameras. The dual design increases sensor area by 33%, allows four
times the light intake per frame, and boosts sensor utilisation pushing 360 camera image quality to an all-new level. From day to night, sunrise to sunset, image quality will never be a compromise.
Behind the sensors sits the upgraded proprietary Triple AI Chip System: two dedicated imaging chips which drastically reduce image noise to produce clean, pure night shots paired with Qualcomm’s flagship 8-core 3.3GHz 4nm chip to deliver powerful computing power, class-leading energy efficiency and longer battery life. A new low-light mode adds two ambient light sensors to cut flicker and pull more out of night scenes, while AdaptiveTone 2.0 meters each lens on its own and captures two exposures per frame for wider dynamic range. The result shows up as sharper detail, cleaner colour, and denoising that holds in the dark.
X6 is also the first 360 camera with native in-camera Dolby Vision and 10-Bit Colour Depth for 360 Cameras, delivering premium quality straight out of the camera. Dynamic metadata is analysed frame by frame to set contrast and brightness for every shot for visuals that are more realistic, dimensional and breathtaking with no extra colour grading required.
Three Shooting Modes in One – One Camera, Countless Possibilities
The X6 is an all-round powerhouse with three interchangeable modes: 360 recording, unlimited gimbal camera, and wide-angle action shooting – offering a 3-in-1 camera ecosystem that can switch at the tap of a finger.
Shoot first, frame later. Hit record in 360 Mode and live in the moment while the X6 captures it all and captures it well at native 8K50fps. Come back and pull the best angle from any direction. Reframe once or a dozen times – the entire scene is always there.
Direct 4K straight from the camera. InstaFrame 2.0 has been rebuilt from the ground up, offering better daily recording and upgraded smart tracking locks onto people, pets or objects for auto-following and smooth stable footage, delivering high quality 4K30fps flat video with no post-shooting framing, operating as a fully unlimited gimbal camera.
A classic action cam when you want one. Switch to single-lens and shoot like a traditional action camera at up to 5K60fps, wide-angle up to 170 degrees (at 5K30fps), or 4K120fps for slow motion that earns the replay.
A True Zero-Edit Experience: A Finished Video While You Charge
The real magic is made after the shot but if you aren’t an expert, editing can be overwhelming. Coinciding with the launch of the X6 is the announcement of Insta360’s self-developed 360 AI model, PanoMind, which powers a set of brand-new auto-editing functions that make 360 footage editing simpler and more intelligent than ever before.
PanoMind was built in-house and trained on more than 10,000 hours of footage across 30+ common scenarios (travel, daily vlogs, skiing, motorcycling, diving, and cycling), and is the first 360-native AI model to understand a full spherical scene rather than a flat frame.
- AI Director – The all-new AI Director allows the X6 to automatically analyse footage, filter highlights, and edit custom daily vlogs while idling charging. Once the finished clip is complete, it will be pushed directly to the Insta360 App. Have extra edits? No worries. Secondary editing can be completed at any time.
- Auto Edit 2.0 – With PanoMind’s improved output, Auto Edit 2.0 sees more accurate highlight recognition and more natural movement, simply select footage and click Auto Edit – then sit back and relax.
- Moments Pro – Acting as an accurate personal editor, the all-new AI powered model deeply integrates Google Gemini cognitive model and Insta360’s exclusive 360 imaging algorithm to create custom stylised finished clips by selecting keywords. This is a new-generation smart camera experience that brings the creative barrier to image making to almost zero.
