If you have ever tried to use your smartphone as your drone controller in bright sunlight, you’ll know how futile that is. Even phones with high nits -that’s a brightness rating – such as the iPhone 17 or Samsung Galaxy S25 at around 3000 NITS aren’t immune, and sadly the Huawei Mate 80, which has a massive 8000 nits is not available in Australia.
This is why I switched to using DJI’s own RC2 controller with its built-in screen for my Flip, Mini 5 Pro and MAVIC 4 Pro. But even then, on super bright summer days here in Western Australia, you often need to fight to see the image.
So, I went searching for controller sunshades that were not expensive, durable and easy to fit.
Baldur
In the past I did try a Baldur LiThor tablet mount that has a foldable sun hood but just found it too unwieldy and tiring to use. It took forever to set up and the $200 price tag makes it expensive.
My research took me to a generic Amazon based model for AUD$30 which does the trick
This quick video shows you how it is constructed and fits.
It comes with a couple of thumbscrews to attach the hood to the body of the controller, and they also throw in an Allen key – which is pointless as these are not Allen key screws.
