That’s it folks. It’s all over bar the shouting. Canon, Panasonic, Sony, Blackmagic. ARRI and the rest can close their doors, and all go home.
Y’see, the new iPhone 17 can now shoot in Apple ProRes RAW, so obviously its all any videographer will ever need from now on.
Yup. All that other kit is now relegated to the place where all old tech goes. It’s out of date and useless in comparison to the technical brilliance we now have access to.
The fact it has a fixed aperture in each of its three lenses doesn’t matter of course.
And the zoom capabilities are a mix of optical and electronic as against true optical? Minor issue.
But aren’t the ergonomics akin to cutting fine diamonds with a Stanley knife? Pfft. Details, details.
‘Cause it has ProRes RAW doncha know? Yeah, that ProRes RAW thing all the pro cameras have. Whatever it is.
But…but… entire movies have been shot on an iPhone!
Sure. Doesn’t mean they SHOULD be.
People who understand video and photography know this is just a fluffery to sell iPhones. Most users won’t even KNOW what ProRes RAW is, let alone how to use or edit with it.
I know many people who had to have the latest and best because of the hype about the latest camera in the latest smartphone – iPhone or Android makes no difference. And then use it for family happy snaps, holiday pics or multitudes of selfies, never taking the phone off “A” for “Automatic”.
If you want a phone, buy a phone. If you want a phone that takes photos, just get one that takes photos and don’t bother getting one with features you’ll never use (and save your money at the same time).
If you want a camera / camcorder, then for goodness’ sake get a proper camera or camcorder – and get information from a professional who knows what they are talking about and can advise according to your needs.
Just don’t fall for the latest hype with stuff you’ll never use and don’t understand.
PS: If you MUST have ther latest and greatest smartphone, at least get the freebie Blackmagic Camera for smartphones. You’ll never look back.

I totally agree with your views on this, David. Would anyone use a pinhole lens on a mirror less body or video camera? It’s a phone that can shoot video, as you say, but my doorbell can do that.
