Review: RØDE Wireless Micro

The cost of wireless mics is dropping and dropping. Even a year ago, a premium brand such as Sennheiser, Hollyland or RØDE would have cost the wrong side of $300-$400, although you could get cheaper ones from any number or no-name manufacturers for a couple of hundred if not less.

But as they say, you got what you paid for, and these days, more and more vloggers and podcasters, thankfully, are starting to understand the value of good quality audio.

Today, Mr Startrack brought me the latest from RØDE, the somewhat unimaginatively, albeit accurately, named Wireless Mic. And you can get it in black, white, orange red or blue if you are fashion conscious, for a miserable AUD$170.

In The Box

So what DO you get inside the nifty little charging box, reminiscent of wireless earpods.

Well, you get not one but two wireless transmitters with clip on or magnetic mounted mics that give, with the charging case, up to 21 hours of operational time.

A system RØDE calls GainAssist controls levels automatically and promises crystal clear and balanced audio for every session.

The receiver part is interesting as RØDE say it has universal camera capability which basically means it can be connected to just about smartphone or camera that supports either a TRS or USB connection.

If you have an iPhone (iOS 16 or later), you can connect the transmitters straight to it via Bluetooth with the RØDE app bypassing the receiver altogether. One assumes this feature will trickle down to Android at some point.

In Summary

In short, the RØDE Micro Wireless is simple to set up, has excellent audio facilities and functionality is incredibly flexible.

For the price, quite frankly, the RØDE Wireless Mic is amazing. The only thing missing I can think of is no memory on board the mics to act as backup, but I guess the price reflects that and something had to be cut.
