Anti-Drone Technology. Better Get Used To It

DJI Drone

In my Twitter / X Feed the other day I noticed an image of the Trump motorcade, and some of the vehicles had some weird antenna things on ‘em. So I did a bit of digging, and for my readers who are into drones, it turned out they were part of a drone detection system.

A little more digging, and I discovered this info on just what types of anti-drone technology there is. I figured we’d probably best start to get used to it.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗶-𝗗𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸

𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀: Use radio frequency (RF) signals to detect and disrupt drone communications. They can jam control signals, GPS signals, or even take over the drone’s flight control.

𝗟𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀: Use high-powered lasers to incapacitate drones by damaging their components or causing them to lose control.

𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀: Use projectiles, such as nets or harpoons to capture or disable drones.

𝗛𝘆𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀: Combine multiple technologies to provide a comprehensive defence against drones eg they might use RF jamming to disrupt communications and then deploy a net to capture it.

𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗶-𝗗𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀

𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 & 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻c𝗲: Protecting military bases, airfields, and other critical infrastructure from drone attacks.

𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆: Securing borders, airports, and other high-risk areas from potential threats.

𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘀: Safeguarding large gatherings, stadiums, and other public spaces from unauthorized drone activity.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗶-𝗗𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆

𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 (𝗔𝗜): AI-powered systems can analyse drone behaviour and predict potential threats, allowing for more proactive and effective responses.

𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀: Autonomous systems can detect and neutralize drones without human intervention, providing a more rapid and efficient defence.

𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿-𝗨𝗔𝗦 (𝗖-𝗨𝗔𝗦) 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: C-UAS systems are being integrated with other security technologies, such as radar and surveillance systems, to create a more comprehensive defence network.
