Just when you thought you were all DJI’d out, they come at you with yet another one!
I have absolutely no idea how big the DJI factory in China is but judging by the amount of product being pumped out of the doors of late, it must be huge!
One thing I do know though, is that each new product seems to incorporate technologies from other existing products.
And today, they have launched the Osmo Mobile 8P which has features lifted from its range of drones as well as cameras, with the main party tricks being tracking and framing magic.
The Osmo Mobile 8P’s 3-axis gimbal l weighs approximately 386 g and features a built-in tripod and a 215 mm extension rod. The tripod’s design has been updated to open wider for enhanced stability on various surfaces, offers up to 10 hours1 of operating time and the built-in USB-C port allows the gimbal to act as a phone charger, making it ideal for extended outdoor filming and live streaming.
I did find that one of the tripod legs kept managing to close itself up
This gimbal is designed specifically for smartphones, not cameras, and unlike previous models, has a new feature in that the control panel can be completely removed and used remotely. It also contains a screen so that even if the gimbal itself is away from you, you can still see the framing you have set up is correct.
As mentioned, a major party trick of the Osmo Mobile 8P is the incorporation of the ActiveTrack system, now up to version 8 and DJI claim it is now clever enough that it will retain its lock on someone even in crowds.
A new Multifunctional Module 2 pairs with the Osmo Mobile 8P to track more than just people and pets as it can also keep general objects, such as cars and landmarks, centred in the frame. You can also use ActiveTrack 8.01 through the DJI Mimo app.
And you’ll be pleased to know that if you are an iPhone user, you can track subjects seamlessly through their native camera app, as the new Osmo Mobile 8P supports Apple DockKit.
Other additions using the DJI Mimo app gives you include cinematic modes DynamicZoom, Slow Shutter and a widescreen mode. A fourth, called Action Shot, maintains fluid framing for fast-paced subjects, responding quickly to keep athletes or dancers centred.
Finally, the gimbal’s 360° Infinite Spin enables a smooth panoramic capture from any angle through an unlimited horizontal rotation. Combined with intelligent tracking, it continuously locks onto moving subjects for seamless, professional-looking footage.
Low-angle shots are also possible by tilting the pan axis forward, allowing creators to capture the world from a child’s or pet’s eye level.
I’ll be doing a full review of the DJI Osmo Mobile 8P very soon.
