Trump’s Tariffs A Threat To Aussie Film Industry.

Initially I suspect Donald Trump whacking a 100% tariff on “foreign made films” makes most people think of Bollywood or films made in other famous locations such as Pinewood Studios in the UK and of course, the Japanese anime market is huge.

But think a bit longer, and you’ll realise Australia is also in his sights, bigly time.

For example, Avengers:Doomsday is being filmed in Australia as we speak and a lot of major blockbusters have been filmed here – the Mad Max franchise immediately springs to mind among others – and of course Fox Studios in Sydney, Village Roadshow on the Gold Coast and the new studios being built by the WA Govt are all potentially in the firing line.

Hopefully the newly re-elected Albanese government will step in and give the local industry some respite, perhaps by agreeing to an Australian content quota for starters and perhaps some extra tax incentives on top of that.

It is estimated that there are over 30,000 film industry workers in this country and that is a lot of voters.

Not to mention Docklands Studios Melbourne with its volume screens.

Indeedy. And there are lots of specialist studios too doing FX, audio and so on who may be affected.
