As some may have noted, for the last week we have been almost “internet-less” due to a break in a fibre optic link. Added to that, despite living in the middle of Western Australia’s second largest city, mobile phone reception is almost non-existent hence using a wireless hotspot is almost useless, except for email.
As is obvious, to run Creative Content / Australian Videocamera, a decent internet connection is not a “maybe” but a “must have”, and my wife Jacqui, who runs a music school in her studio attached to the house, whilst not as dependent, does need it on a daily basis.
Power
Anyway, yesterday late, two NBN techies turned up finally to fix the offending link, which meant them getting into the roof space – which in turn meant turning the power off. I’ve had pest control people, electricians, insulation installers and others inside my roof over the years, and they have never needed the power off, but, if that is NBN ruling, so be it.
Of course, the time they turned up was just as Jacqui was seeing her first students for the day, and whilst she can live without the internet for a period, to teach music in this day and age you do need power. As well as the obvious for electronic keyboards and drums, there is lighting, air conditioning (it was freezing here yesterday) and her computers and printers all used in the teaching process.
The air conditioning we couldn’t do much about, but luckily the studio is well insulated so for the hour or so the power would be off wasn’t too much of an issue, with the heating being on most of the day.
As for the rest though, it is non-negotiable.
Perspective
So many times, when we do reviews it is hard to gain a perspective of how something might fair in a real-life situation, but this was tailor made.
You may remember a few weeks back I reviewed the DJI Power 1000 Mini?
Well, I am more than happy to report that over the period of the power being off whilst the techies restored the internet link, it shouldered the burden of Jacqui’s power needs in the studio with admirable aplomb and didn’t miss a beat.
Phew!
